INSTALLATION MANUAL - Star Empire v. 1.00
Copyright (C) 1992 Antoine Le Huenen
REQUIREMENTS:
To run INSTALL.EXE, you need 256k of memory and a hard drive or two floppy
disk drives.
BEFORE RUNNING INSTALL
Before running the installation program, you must first uncompress the star
empire files and copy them into a directory that you wish to execute the
program in. It is recommended that you use the directory \BBS, but any
directory will do. Once all files have been uncompressed and copied into
the working directory, you may then run the installation software.
RUNNING INSTALL.EXE
1) You can execute INSTALL.EXE by typing INSTALL in the directory where you
have copied all of the Star Empire Files. You will be immendiately prompted
for the BBS Name. This is the Name that you will use for your BBS, yet if
you decide to change it at a later date, you may do so from Star Empire. An
example of a BBS Name would be "Temporal Existance", "Celtic Stones", or
something of the sort. Your BBS Name may be up to forty characters in
length.
2) After typing in the BBS Name, you will be prompted to select the
communications port that Star Empire will use. Valid choice are one through
four. Most computers use COM1 or COM2 for their modems. If you are unsure,
consult your computer manual.
3) After selecting the communications port, you will be prompted for your
modem's maximum baud rate. Valid choices are 300, 1200 and 2400. If you
are unsure which is the maximum speed, consult your modem manual.
4) You will then be prompted whether you want to use separate directories for
your Star Empire files. What this means is if you want to have the whole
program run in your working directory, or split up some of the Star Empire
files into separate directories. If you select 'N' for this prompt, it
will assume that you wish to use your current working directory for all of
its files. You may then skip to step 6). However, if you wish to use
separate directories, skip to step 5).
5) Star Empire will prompt you to enter the location of its different types
of files. It will suggest directories to use, and if you wish to use them,
just press <ENTER>. However, if you are unsatisfied with the suggestions,
you may edit the directory name you wish to use. After you press <ENTER>
the directories will be created if they don't already exist.
6) The computer will ask you how big of a galaxy you wish to use. This step
is VERY important! The size of the galaxy is very much dependant on how
much free disk space you have and the speed of your computer. For most
applications, a size 10 galaxy would be sufficient, and would only require
92k for the planet data file. However, you may choose a large galaxy, up
to a 100 size. This size is squared, so 10 would make a 10x10 sector galaxy.
at 100x100, the size of your datafile is over 8 megs. long! So choose this
with care.
7) The next questions will be dealing mostly with SysOp stuff. You will be
prompted to enter the SysOp alias. This is the name that you wish to use
in the BBS. This name is how users will see and identify you during the
program. It can be up to twenty characters in length, and like the BBS
Name, can be changed at a later date.
8) After selecting your SysOp alias, you will be prompted for the SysOp
password. Choose this password carefully, as any one who knows this password
can identify themselves as you and use the SysOp editors as if they were you.
After typing in the password, this password will copy itself as the System
SysOp password AND your personal password. It is, however, recommended that
once inside Star Empire you change your personal password to something else.
9) You will be prompted for your REAL Name. This information is kept in
the user record, so that the system can greet your properly when you log-on
the BBS.
10) Finally, INSTALL must know whether you have a colour monitor or not, for
obvious reasons. Just type Y or N for this prompt and press enter.
When these questions have been completed, the computer will star the process
of randomizing the planets. The amount of time this takes is dependant on
whether it's running on a hard drive or floppy disk, and the size of your
galaxy. This file will be called PLANETS.DAT and will be located in your
data files directory if one was specified, or in your working directory if
not. It will then make the galaxy file, which is a file that contains the
setup, number of users, SysOp password and any other information pertinent
to the BBS. Finally the userfile will be created. This file contains all
the information about the different users. It will be stored in the same
directory as PLANETS.DAT, and GALAXY.DAT.
If you specified separate directories, several files will be moved from your
working directory into these directories.
NOTE: Install will create your SysOp account in Star Empire, so there is no
need to create another. This account will be under your SysOp alias and use
your SysOp password that you specified. It will have highest security (255)
and be user #1.
INSTALLATION should now be complete. You may now read STARV01.DOC for
information on how to run the BBS program.
